Former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been an ardent supporter of his alma mater since leaving for the NFL. The Red Raiders have had some great moments during that run, most notably the men’s basketball program’s run to the national championship game in 2019.
Friday night’s men’s Big 12 tournament game was not among those great moments.
Facing top-ranked Houston, No. 25 Texas Tech hung in during the first half, and trailed just 32–29 at the break. It was an encouraging performance early on, as evidenced by Mahomes’s tweet at the time.
“Great first half! Keep it rolling! @TexasTechMBB,” Mahomes posted.

Those good times did not last.
The Cougars absolutely dominated the second half, outscoring the Red Raiders 50–30 en route to an 82–59 win. Mahomes’s follow-up tweet was quite appropriate.

At 30–3, Houston will face No. 7 Iowa State in the Big 12 final, and likely lock up a top seed for the upcoming NCAA tournament. Texas Tech’s season is far from over, though.
The Red Raiders are currently projected as a No. 6 seed in the Big Dance by Sports Illustrated‘s Kevin Sweeney, who has them facing James Madison in the first round as of Saturday morning.
