Patrick Mahomes: Chiefs ‘have to execute in the red zone’

The Kansas City Chiefs are on a five-game winning streak since dropping their home opener. Tied for the best record in the NFL is a noteworthy accomplishment, but it isn’t enough for the defending Super Bowl champions.

The elite play of Kansas City’s defense has turned heads, but it has also shined a light on the offense’s lack of explosive plays that had become a staple of the Patrick Mahomes era. During Wednesday’s press conference, Mahomes addressed the lack of touchdowns in the red zone.

“I think it’s just like I said, you got to have these sustained drives like we had this last game. But you have to execute in the red zone,” Mahomes explained. That’s something we’ve taken pride in these last few years, just scoring touchdowns in the red zone.

“Obviously, in this last game, we didn’t do that. The game was close because we didn’t score those touchdowns. We got field goals and didn’t get points and some drives. And so we have to continue to get better and better. And make sure that when we have these long sustained drives, we score touchdowns when we get down in the red zone.”

Mahomes has thrown five interceptions through six games this season and has blamed it on being greedy for big plays. The reigning league Most Valuable Player is looking to eliminate mistakes as he has another quarterback showdown this Sunday with Los Angeles Chargers star Justin Herbert.
