Patrick Bamford's ambitious Leeds United claim as he sets out season targets

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford believes finishing in a European spot is something the club should be aiming for this season. The Whites have started their third consecutive year of Premier League football with four points from their first two matches.

Jesse Marsch’s side defeated Wolves 2-1 on the opening day of the season, before squandering a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Southampton. After only narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Leeds will be hoping for a much-improved campaign this time around.

And while even a mid-table finish would represent progress, Bamford has set his sights even higher. He thinks targeting a place in Europe will help develop a winning mentality amongst the squad.

“We haven’t really set down a league position that we want to aim for, we kind of take the games in bunches and give ourselves a target in a group of so many games of what we want to achieve in that time.

“But I think the general feeling is pushing it, we want to go as far as we can. For me I was saying we need to be thinking about Europe.

“It sounds daft but I’m thinking that I want to play in Europe and I think we should be thinking about trying to get there. It does seem a big gap from where we finished last year to there, but I think if we’re aiming that way, you start growing that mentality naturally between the team.

“The fact that we were gutted we only got a point at the weekend, that eventually turns into something that keeps the standards high. You know what you’re aiming for even if it seems far at the start.”
