Patient taken to hospital after multi-vehicle crash causes four miles of tailbacks on A19

A person has been taken to hospital after a multi-vehicle collision on the A19 near Sunderland.

Emergency services including police, fire and ambulance attended the scene of the crash which happened just after the A1231 Sunderland Highway at 8.30am. Two lanes were blocked and there were 20 minute delays with tailbacks for more than four miles.

It was reported one vehicle had struck the barrier and then another car collided with it. One patient was treated and discharged on-scene, and another was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for further treatment.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We received a call at 8.30am to reports of a road traffic incident on the A19 south-bound near North Hylton, Washington. We dispatched one ambulance crew and one specialist paramedic. One patient was treated and discharged on-scene, and another was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for further treatment."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At 8.33am today (Friday) we received a report of a collision involving two cars on the A19, just past the junction with A1231.

“It was reported one vehicle had struck the barrier and then another car collided with it.

“It is not believed anyone involved has sustained any serious injuries and officers remain in attendance at the scene.”

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We can confirm that three appliances from Washington, Marley Park and Sunderland Central Community Fire Stations were in attendance of a multiple-vehicle road traffic collision earlier this morning just off the slip road southbound on the A19 at the A1231 Hylton Grange junction.

“Our Fire Control team received a call at 8.46am by a concerned motorist. During the incident we worked alongside our blue light colleagues at the North East Ambulance Service and Northumbria Police.

“Our crews made the vehicles safe and left the scene at 9.16am."

The road has now fully reopened to traffic.
