The Denver Broncos gave cornerback Pat Surtain a four-year, $96 million contract extension on Wednesday that included a $15 million signing bonus. With an average of $24 million per year, Surtain is now the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.
“It’s life-changing, honestly, to be able to get this deal done so early in my career,” Surtain said. “Some people [aren’t] able to see second contracts. To be able to see that and to be able to have the deal done is a blessing. I’m relieved by it [and] I’m thinking about what I’m going to get first.
“First purchase coming up soon. I’m definitely thinking about that coming up soon, but I’m just very grateful. It kept me grounded, I could say, but also humble at the same time.”

So what’s going to be the big splash buy?
“I have to get [myself] a new ride or something,” the cornerback said. “That’s something that’s been on my bucket list.”
