Pat Spillane was once punched by fan after Sunday Game comments and thought they might be following him

Pat Spillane was once punched after a match as he left Croke Park stadium, RSVP reports.

The legendary GAA star and pundit was set upon by a group of disgruntled Donegal supporters after his commentary on The Sunday Game.

This came following Donegal's famous win over Cork to reach the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final in 2012.

Pat said: "I once got punched by Donegal supporters on Clonliffe Road after a game.

That day I ran to my car and was driving a bit fast down Clonliffe Road when a Ban Garda stopped me. 'You are speeding sir!' she said and I told her that I had just been attacked by a group of supporters and that they could still be after me.

"So yes, there were time it was like running with the bulls in Pamplona."

Pat is reflecting on 30 years as a pundit and presenter on The Sunday Game ahead of his final show next weekend.

He told the RTÉ Guide: "Enoch Powell said that all political lives end in failure. So getting the last hurrah right is something many get wrong because they stay on too long.

"I left Kerry after playing in an All-Ireland semi final and now people are saying I should stay on and I am thinking that is great because I will ride out into the sunset on a high."

Pat is backing Kerry to lift Sam Maguire as they face Galway on Sunday afternoon.

He said: "From the start of the year, I said that All-Ireland winners would be either Kerry or Dublin. I never strayed from that belief. And so I still think Kerry will win this Sunday. I have no doubt about that."

A Kerry victory would be very sweet for Pat as he says goodbye to the much loved RTÉ show.

Pat said: "Being involved with The Sunday Game for the past 30 years, people tended to forget that I did alright in football. So I would like to be remembered in years to come as that fellow who played football and not just that fellow from The Sunday Game."
