Passport warning for tourists heading on Spain and Portugal holidays

Tourists heading off this summer should ensure they have their passport up to date before jetting off.

Holidaymakers are gearing up to go abroad to several popular destinations this summer. Although Albania has become a surprise contender amongst Irish tourists looking for deals online, the Iberian Peninsula remains a firm favourite for foreign getaways.

Although holidays within EU countries, such as Spain and Portugal, tend to be straightforward, it's important for people who haven't travelled in a while to note the expiration date on their passport. Some tourists will be heading away for the first time since the pandemic this summer.

People who need to renew their passports can do it online for convenience. It's worth noting that it takes a minimum of 10 working days to process an adult passport renewal application, while first time passport applicants often wait up until a month.

Similarly, people who haven't travelled through Dublin Airport in a while should familiarise themselves with security screening and other recommendations. Although the liquid limit remains at 100ml for most passengers, exceptions can be made depending on the circumstance for some items, including baby milk, medicines and dietary liquids.

Passengers are still advised to arrive at the airport up to 2.5 hours before a short-haul flight, and up to 3.5 hours before a long-haul flight. This advice remains in place after long delays witnessed at Dublin Airport last summer.

Passengers can also view the estimated security queue times on dublinairport.com, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger and via the Dublin Airport App.

Separately, people heading to Spain should also be mindful of a new alcohol policy before they head. The Department of Foreign Affairs previously warned that Irish tourists could be fined if caught drinking in outdoor spots, such as the beach, while holidaying in Spain.
