Passport renewal: Urgent warning as new rules kick in today

Britons have been urged to renew their passport as soon as possible as new passport ruled have come into effect a price rise on Thursday.

The Home Office announced three weeks ago that the price of renewing a UK passport would rise by 7 per cent on April 10.

This means that the cost of renewing a passport online will jump to £94.50 from £88.50. For a child, a new passport will cost £61.50.

It follows a 9 per cent increase in 2023 and a 7 per cent increase in April last year.

A government spokesperson said: “The new fees will help the Home Office to continue to move towards a system that meets its costs through those who use it, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation.

“The government does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications.”

The money raised will go towards processing British citizens at the UK border, they added.

The Home Office says that passports are almost always processed quickly. For every 1,000 applications, all but three are processed in three weeks or less.

There are also fast-track services available for those who need a passport within a week.

Britons must renew a passport when it expires if they plan to abroad.

But figures show that the British passport is among the most expensive than Europe, behind by Denmark (£100) and Italy in third (£97). Switzerland (£123) charges the most for the document.

Experts have warned that rising passport costs could mean that some Britons are priced out of travelling abroad.
