One person has been killed and another was critically injured after a collision involving a 52-seater bus and a car on a bridge in west Wales.
A major incident was declared on Tuesday and a health board asked people not to attend the local hospital unless they had life-threatening injuries to ensure there was enough capacity to treat those injured in the collision.
Dyfed-Powys police said: “Police are in attendance at a road traffic collision which occurred on the A477 near the Cleddau Bridge, Pembroke Dock at about 2.15pm today, Tuesday, 5 September.
“The collision involved a car and a coach. Sadly, one person has died. Next of kin have been advised and are being supported by officers.
“One person was taken to hospital in a critical condition. A number of passengers on the coach were taken to hospital with various levels of injuries.
“The A477 is currently closed between the Honeyborough roundabout and the Pembroke roundabout and road users are advised to take an alternative route.”
The Welsh first minister, Mark Drakeford, posted on Twitter, which is now known as X: “Worrying to hear news of a major incident on the Cleddau Bridge … My thoughts are with all those involved and my thanks to the first responders and emergency services working at the scene.”
One patient, understood to be the driver who was trapped, was flown to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff by air ambulance while nine other people were taken to Withybush hospital in Haverfordwest.
A Welsh ambulance service spokesperson said: “We sent five emergency ambulances, one duty operations manager, one Cymru high acuity response unit and non-emergency patient transport service vehicles to the scene.
“We were supported by colleagues from the Wales air ambulance. We transferred one patient to University Hospital of Wales, and a further nine patients to Withybush hospital for further treatment.”
By 4.45pm the crash was no longer being treated as a major incident.
Hywel Dda University health board asked people not to attend Withybush hospital in Haverfordwest unless they had very serious conditions, so it could treat people injured in the crash.
It said: “In order for us to support the incident response, we’re asking people to only attend A&E at Withybush hospital if you have a life-threatening illness or serious injury.”
The closure of the bridge, a key link between north and south Pembrokeshire, caused major delays for commuters and holidaymakers.
