Passengers heading to Manchester Airport are urged to leave even EARLIER as M56 closures add to chaos

Passengers heading to Manchester Airport have been urged to leave yet more time for their journeys.

The troubled hub has issued a warning to people planning to travel this week to allow more time to get their flights amid a series of overnight closures on the M56. The warning comes after weeks of chaos with huge queues, missing luggage, holiday cancellations and delays.

Earlier this month the airport was forced to issue an apology after images of chaotic scenes got national attention.

A spokesperson for said: “We apologise to any passengers in Terminal One who were affected by long waits at security yesterday afternoon. We are emerging from the most damaging two years in our history and, like several other UK airports, are facing resourcing challenges at present.

“Most passengers will get through security within 30 minutes, but on occasion security queue times will be higher than this, and so we are advising passengers to arrive at the airport three hours before their flight is due to depart. We have welcomed nearly 400 new starters into the operation so far this year, with a further 500 people going through security and background checks right now.”

And in a further warning this week the airport posted a tweet saying: "Please allow extra time for your journey to Manchester Airport."

The M56 will be closed between junctions 5 and 7 from 9pm until 6am every night up to and including Friday, June 17. Airport bosses say diversions will be in place and advise passengers to "allow extra time for your journey to the airport as journey times will be longer than usual".
