Pasifika-First Nations clash completes Lions schedule

The British and Irish Lions will play a combined Indigenous-Pasifika squad in Melbourne, with the historic clash's confirmation the final touring puzzle piece 100 days out from kick-off.

Former All Blacks coach Ian Foster has also been confirmed as part of the coaching staff for the trans-Tasman side that will play the Lions in their final warm-up fixture before the three-Test series begins in Brisbane on July 19.

The AUNZ Invitational XV will assemble for the first time in 30 years at the Adelaide Oval against the tourists, who will be coached by Andy Farrell.

Foster's role was confirmed on Thursday as Rugby Australia locked in the historic First Nations & Pasifika XV concept that will fill the hole at Marvel Stadium left by the demise of the Melbourne Rebels.

That game will come three days after the Brisbane Test, one of nine Lions games on the once-in-12-year tour that begins against the Western Force in Perth on June 28.

The restructured Super Rugby Pacific competition has featured teams from Fiji and a New Zealand-based Pasifika outfit since 2022.

In that same year the Wallabies wore a First Nations jersey - the kit has now become a regular fixture - and sung the national anthem in the Yugambeh language before their Brisbane Test against England.

"(It) will be a great celebration of those who continue to contribute enormously to the Australian rugby community," Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh said.

"With just 100 days to go until the first match, it's certainly not far away and whether you're a lifelong rugby supporter, a general sports fan or someone who loves live events, this tour is something you must be a part of."

The final allocation of tickets went on sale on Thursday, including tickets for the Brisbane Test that saw its initial allocation exhausted within an hour last year.

"It is fantastic to confirm the match schedule for the 2025 Tour with the added fixture against a First Nations & Pasifika XV at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium - a game that everyone at the Lions is hugely excited about," Lions boss Ben Calveley said.

"Together we are set to welcome more than half a million fans at games in 2025 for what will be an amazing spectacle in one of the greatest sporting countries in the world."
