Pascal Struijk reveals he still speaks to Liverpool man after controversial Leeds United incident

Leeds United's only red card of the season came at the beginning of the campaign when Liverpool visited Elland Road in September.

Pascal Struijk's challenge on Harvey Elliott caused the Reds teenager to suffer a fracture dislocation to his left ankle during the second half of Liverpool's 3-0 win over the Whites.

Referee Craig Pawson showed Struijk a straight red card after assessing the situation, having initially allowed play to carry on.

The Whites defender, along with manager Marcelo Bielsa, as well as Elliott himself, insisted the challenge was a fair attempt to retrieve possession, with unfortunate consequences.

Following a four-and-a-half-month injury lay-off, Elliott made his senior comeback in the FA Cup tie with Cardiff City earlier this month, and in midweek started at San Siro as Liverpool defeated Internazionale 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League.

Elliott's comeback has been well-received on both sides, with Struijk stating he is 'really happy' to see the youngster make a full recovery in a recent interview with BBC West Yorkshire Sport.

"[I'm] really pleased. I'm really happy for him to be back and so quick, I would say. His recovery has been quite quick.

"I've kept in touch with him, straight after the moment and a couple times when I saw him improving, going onto the pitch for the first time so it's been really good, [I've been] really pleased to see him [come back] - the contact we have is also good.

Reflecting on the incident and the impact it had on him personally, Struijk says he tried to ignore the negative reaction, which largely came from opposing supporters who misinterpreted the challenge as a dangerous one.

"It was a bit crazy and a bit hectic straight after the game and the day after. I kind of just blocked myself out of, around what's happening and just focused on the people that are close to me.

"Life continues, and that's what happened," he finished.

The 22-year-old also told BBC Radio Leeds he is still waiting patiently for a Netherlands call-up ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Struijk is expected to be involved this weekend as Leeds host Manchester United at Elland Road.
