Pascal Struijk pinpoints Leeds United's failure to see out Southampton win on 'dumb mistakes'

Pascal Struijk has pinpointed Leeds United’s failure to see out a win at Southampton down to ‘dumb mistakes’. The Whites had looked well set to continue their 100% start to the season at St. Mary’s as they found themselves 2-0 ahead on the hour mark thanks to a Rodrigo Moreno double.

Despite controlling much of the game for 70 minutes, Leeds allowed their opponents back into the contest as Ralph Hasenhuttl went for the jugular with several attacking substitutions. And ultimately Leeds were unable to cope with the impetus those changes made as Joe Aribo and Kyle Walker-Peters scored in the final 20 minutes to ensure both sides earned a share of the spoils.

Speaking to LUTV after the game, Struijk was disappointed to leave St. Mary’s with just a point and believes he and his teammates should have seen out the game given the position they were in.

He said: “Some dumb mistakes from us really which gave them the chance to equalise. But really we should see this game out and make sure we win this.

“We had chances as well but we just need to score them and make sure we don’t concede them. When they put so many attackers on they’re going to create some pressure on the back line but make sure we don’t concede and this is the biggest thing. It made it hard for us.”
