Parts of nature reserve shut for breeding season of 'highly sensitive' bird

Parts of a popular nature reserve in the ACT will be shut for months during the breeding season of the peregrine falcon.

Red Rocks Cliff near Kambah Pool will be formally closed from Thursday, August 1 to Tuesday, December 31 to protect the falcons from human contact.

The cliff in Bullen Range Nature Reserve is a popular rock climbing spot for Canberra climbers.

No disturbances allowed for breeding birds

ACT Parks and Conservation Service executive branch manager Michaela Watts said the reserve would be temporarily closed.

"We're entering the breeding season for our spectacular peregrine falcons. These birds are highly sensitive to human activity during their breeding season so even minor disturbances can greatly disrupt their nesting sites," Ms Watts said.

"Respecting this closure and giving the falcons appropriate space is crucial for the success of the breeding season and the survival of this small population. This will give these remarkable birds the peace they need to raise fledglings free of disturbance."

According to the Canberra Orthinologist Group, peregrine falcons can be seen over any habitat and often fly and hunt over the suburbs.

The group said the falcon is most likely to be seen soaring high over areas within a few minutes' flying time of the Murrumbidgee River corridor.

Peregrine numbers peaked in 2002-03, according to the group, but have declined abruptly since.

Red Rocks Cliff, which is located on the western side of the Murrumbidgee River, is one of only seven breeding locations for peregrine falcons in the ACT, according to ACT Parks.

Rock climbers urged elsewhere

Ms Watts said while the birds spend most of the year happily sharing the cliffs with rock climbers, it was critical to protect their territory during breeding season.

"I'm thankful to our rock-climbing community for their patience and cooperation each year as we close the cliff for a few short months," she said.

"I remind the community that the use of drones in ACT parks and reserves is prohibited year-round. Drones can also disturb these sensitive falcons and other species in our parks.

"While the cliff is closed, I encourage the community to explore or rediscover many other great options along the Murrumbidgee River Corridor."

Alternative options for rock climbers include Bee Crag on the Murrumbidgee Discovery Track, about two kilometres to the north of Kambah Pool.

Kambah Rocks, which is about one kilometre downstream of Red Rocks cliff, and Little Pine near Pine Island carpark near the playground are also open to public.

Rangers will be visiting the area to remind climbers of the closure, and prosecution and penalties may apply for non-compliance.
