Partick welcomes colourful new mural by Glasgow artist Molly Hankinson

The gable end of a block of flats in Partick has been given a colourful refresh with the help of a local artist.

Visual artist, illustrator, and muralist Molly Hankinson was commissioned to work on the Purdon Street wall as part of the Yardworks GRID project.

The project aims to link the communities of Partick, Yorkhill and Govan and has seen gable ends brought to life with large-scale murals to create an open-air gallery trail and attract visitors to the area.

For her first-ever gable end, Molly took inspiration from the Partick Annex and Partick Community Garden to create the artwork which features a woman working in a colourful garden surrounded by plants.

The Glasgow School of Art graduate said she was a bit "shellshocked" after completing her piece.

She said: "Finding it really hard to put into words what this week has been for me. I’ve done things I never knew I could and have been surprised when I’ve taken to them in a way I never expected… first time working in spray paint which was a really daunting thing for me especially for a project of this size, after being told repeatedly for years that it is really hard thing to get the hang of and that I probably would struggle with it.

"I’m so glad I’ve overcome this particular psychological hurdle because it’s only upwards from here and I can't wait to keep on learning and getting better at something totally new.

"Working at heights I never thought myself capable of, surviving getting stuck up the cherry picker for half an hour, and then going back up the next day.

"The intense imposter syndrome I’ve been feeling about this wall over the last month has finally started to wane and feel like I’ve proven that I belong in this community a little bit more."

Molly's work also features inside Freddy & Hicks cafe on Nitshdale Street and can be found online here.

Keep your eyes peeled for two other mural being installed in Govan and Yorkhill over the summer.
