Partick Thistle win can set us up for a good end to the season, says Accies star

Steve Lawson says Hamilton’s 4-0 win at Partick Thistle can set them up for the rest of this season, and has given them a major boost ahead of Saturday’s clash at home to Queen of the South.

The Frenchman also believes playing on Firhill’s rutted surface will convince his side they can play well on any pitch.

Lawson played a major role from central midfield as an Andy Ryan double and strikes from David Moyo and Andy Winter put the Maryhill side to the sword.

The former Livingston star says he feels the win was reward for recent good performances that haven’t earned Hamilton points.

He said: “It was good in the changing room, especially after a game like that, because it’s not the football we like to play. The pitch wasn’t helping us, but we did great.

“The team fought and helped each other, so we were all happy, and we hope that this weekend will be the same.

“That’s the feeling you want to have every weekend. I think every football player wants to have that feeling every weekend.

“We played the pitch but there is a lot to take on for the next game, team spirit especially.

“The pitch wasn’t good, and this wasn’t our football, but we won with a clean sheet and four goals, our three strikers scored goals.

“We showed the fans, other clubs and ourselves that we can play on good pitches, bad pitches, it doesn’t matter – it’s the fighting spirit that we have to keep for the next game.

“It was good for the team, it’s good for the mind-set.

“We had been playing well in the last games before that, but we didn’t get the points – we were drawing 2-2 or 1-1, so it’s good to take the three points, the clean sheet, and it’s good for the team.”

Hamilton welcome Willie Gibson’s Queen of the South on Saturday, who are desperate for points to escape the Championship bottom slot, but Lawson says Accies know there is a chance of nabbing a play-off slot.

He said: “It’s a massive game. I think we just try to keep the same plan, the same basics, and do the same. Fight hard, win every second ball, and we’ll see what happens.

“Queen of the South are bottom of the league so we have to look at that, but we will also look as well on top of us.

“Today it’s impossible for anybody to say we’re going to play at the bottom or the play-off, so we have to take every game day by day and after that we’re going to see at the end of the six remaining games where we are.”
