Partick Thistle secure Premier Sports Cup progress as Ian McCall hails 'any means necessary' approach

Partick Thistle are one game away from Hampden after a hard-fought 1-0 win over league rivals Arbroath in the Premier Sports Cup round of 16.

The Jags were looking to move to the quarter-final stage of this competition after a successful group stage campaign saw them qualify from their section that included Premiership side Kilmarnock . They can now look forward to the last eight after Aidan Fitzpatrick's goal sealed a narrow win against Dick Campbell's men.

Aberdeen, Dundee and Rangers are already in the draw with teams such as Celtic, Dundee United Motherwell and Hearts looking to join them ahead of tonight's selections. McCall says it was a tale of missed chances at Firhill but he was just relieved to see his team progress after a good late save from keeper David Mitchell.

Partick Thistle travel to Gayfield to face Arbroath again on Saturday, this time on league duty.

Jags boss McCall said: "We had some good chances and missed some sitters but credit to Arbroath – they put their bodies on the line and their keeper made some great saves. Ironically, David Mitchell also made a great save right at the end to prevent extra time but that’s football. I was delighted when our goal finally came.

"Ultimately, it’s a cup tie and you just want to go through. If Arbroath had dominated us and we’d still won 1-0 I’d be just as delighted as I am now. We could have won by more but you must respect your opponents."
