Today we launch our annual countdown of the biggest companies by turnover in Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The Top 500 businesses list features household names which have been around for decades - along with many of the less well-known companies which play just as important a part in keeping the wheels of UK industry turning.
The list - the fourth we have published - has been put together by researchers from the business schools at De Montfort, Derby and Nottingham Trent universities, supported by East Midlands Chamber. It uses historical data from Companies House accounts filed for the period between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021.
This year's list can be considered the Covid Top 500 - because it covers a period when the economy was hugely impacted by the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.
The total combined revenues of all 500 companies stands at £82.1 billion, a nine per cent drop on the £90.5 billion reported last year.
Likewise, the total number of people employed by the companies on the list was 434,348 - down 7.5 per cent on the previous year.
In its listing report, De Montfort University says of the fall in revenues: "This should not be a surprise because it shows the impact on sales performance of most companies arising from the Covid pandemic, restrictions and lockdowns during the year in question.
"The decrease in employment of 7.5 per cent is smaller and suggests that employers were retaining staff, supported by government support such as furloughs.
"For comparison, the UK economy GDP fell steeply by 25 points during the period April to June 2020 and then recovered, with a second, smaller dip from September 2020 to January 2021, before continuing to recover more gradually.
"There is no doubt that the period of Covid greatly impacted firms' performance, both in loss of sales and additional costs, but that this was followed by steep growth."
The list includes companies that have their registered offices based in either Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire - including some registered at their accountants. It does not include big local employers which have their registered offices outside the region - Walkers crisps in Leicester, for instance.
This year the list is sponsored by NatWest Group and Leicester-based property developer Bradgate Estates.
