Parrott praise, Sarr assist, Ndombele struggle, Etete shines: How Tottenham loan stars fared

Some of Tottenham Hotspur's 11 loan players have certainly been catching the eye with their performances across Europe this week.

Spurs have a large group of players currently away from the club and plying their trade in England, Scotland, France, Spain and Sweden, all looking to make the staff at Tottenham, not least the club's head coach Antonio Conte, take notice. Some of the players have been sent out to broaden their experience of the senior game, some to simply get minutes under their belts and others to place them in the shop window ahead of potential summer moves.

Here's how the large group of Spurs loanees got on over the past week.

Giovani Lo Celso (Villarreal)

Lo Celso enjoyed more Champions League joy as he played the full match as Villarreal stunned Bayern Munich in midweek with a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena to take their place in the semi-finals.

Sky Sports handed the Argentinean an eight in their player ratings for his performance against the German giants. Lo Celso was involved in Villarreal's crucial goal on the night, rushing up the pitch and sliding a ball through to Gerard Moreno. He squared it for Samuel Chukwueze, who lifted his finish over Manuel Neuer to stun the hosts.

Lo Celso, who had been named man of the match in the first leg, then got just 29 minutes to his name in Saturday's 2-1 La Liga win at Getafe as Villarreal boss Unai Emery continues to start him in the Champions League and rest him from the starting line-up in the league in recent weeks.

Lo Celso has now made 14 appearances for Emery's team since his deadline day switch from Tottenham.

Bryan Gil (Valencia)

Gil was back in action after his hip injury with 74 minutes to his name as Valencia lost 2-1 at home to Osasuna in La Liga on Saturday. The 21-year-old was on the left wing and completed one key pass, one dribble and took one shot at goal in a subdued performance.

Valencia travel to Villarreal on Tuesday night with Gil and Lo Celso set to be reunited, but all eyes will be on this weekend when Gill will be hoping to line up in the Copa del Rey final against Real Betis on Saturday night.

The La Liga club will want Gil to be sharp for that match because he has quickly become a big part of their team with 12 appearances for the Spanish side, registering one assist since his switch from Tottenham.

Tanguy Ndombele (Lyon)

It was a disappointing week for Ndombele. The 25-year-old Frenchman had been struggling with an injury ahead of Lyon's Europa League quarter-final second leg against West Ham and he only managed 45 minutes on the night as the French side slipped to a 3-0 defeat at home.

The midfielder then didn't appear in Lyon's Ligue 1 game on Sunday as they romped to a 6-1 victory at home against Bordeaux.

Pape Matar Sarr (Metz)

Sarr made his first back-to-back starts in Ligue 1 for Metz since October as they drew 1-1 in a big scrap at the bottom of the table with Clermont on Sunday.

The 19-year-old impressed in a busy performance in an attacking midfield role at the tip of a midfield diamond and the teenager grabbed an assist. Sarr seized quickly on to a loose ball in the first half and played an instant perfectly-weighted first time ball between the lines to Nicolas de Preville, who ran through to put Metz into the lead.

Clermont hit back with an equaliser before Metz went down to 10 men after a red card but they held on for a point.

Sarr was WhoScored's man of the match with a rating of 7.51, which included two key passes and a shot on target, as well as three tackles and two clearances.

It has been a tough developmental season for Sarr with Metz bottom of Ligue 1, two points behind Bordeaux and five points adrift of 18th-placed Clermont, who lie in the relegation play-off spot.

The teenager has now played 28 times for the French strugglers this season before he aims to show Tottenham what he's about when he returns to N17 in the summer.

Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic)

With Carter-Vickers having already earned himself legendary status at Celtic earlier this month by scoring the winning goal in the Old Firm Derby and named man of the match for his defensive work, he could not prevent Rangers from getting revenge in the Scottish Cup semi-final at the weekend.

The 24-year-old played the full 120 minutes and hit the crossbar with an effort before the game went to extra-time and the team in blue won the day.

Carter-Vickers earned a rating of eight from the Scottish Daily Express with the review: "Another solid performance from the centre-half, was inches away from scoring the second goal after his effort smacked the bar which could have ended the game."

Carter-Vickers' loan spell has been a huge success and Celtic are expected to take up the option to buy him, which football.london understands is around £6million up front with potential add-ons that could make it £10million in all eventually. The centre-back is also believed to be interesting a number of Premier League clubs.

The 24-year-old has four goals and one assist from his 39 games in all competitions for Celtic so far in this big campaign in his career.

Troy Parrott (MK Dons)

Troy Parrott scored another superb strike to make it six goals in eight matches for club and country, although he could not prevent MK Dons' 15-game unbeaten run ending with a 3-2 defeat at home to fellow League One promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday.

The 20-year-old ran through and dinked a clever finish over the goalkeeper which a covering defender could only help over the line.

The MK Citizen handed Parrott a seven in their player ratings, with the write-up: "Took his goal really well, and showed glimpses of magic."

Ahead of the match, MK captain Dean Lewington was quoted in that newspaper about his link-up with Parrott and how the Irishman has settled inside the club.

"I have always had a good relationship with Troy," said the captain. "He makes some really good runs, and is easy to spot as a defender. Some players you can pick their runs early and with Troy, I got a feeling straight away where he would be going. He lends himself to those runs in behind and it's good to see him finishing them off now."

The skipper added: "He's a hugely popular member of the team. When you're coming down a level or two, you play through those bad spells, learn about yourself and what you have to do.

"All young players will experience that at some point, and Troy has knuckled down, he's taken care of himself and is putting it in in training. His form has come back, his goals have come back and he's come back as a better player than he was at the start."

Parrott has now played 42 times this season and scored nine goals and provided six assists in a good loan spell in Milton Keynes.

Kion Etete (Cheltenham Town)

Another 20-year-old Spurs striker enjoyed a fine match as Etete was named man of the match for Cheltenham Town at the weekend as they drew 2-2 at home to Gillingham.

Etete was involved in Cheltenham's first equaliser, bursting upfield and after Alfie May's shot was parried by the keeper, so Callum Wright fired home. Gillingham retook the lead but Etete netted the leveller 12 minutes from time with a header from six yards after a corner was headed across to him.

Etete had less joy on Easter Monday, playing the full 90 minutes again as Cheltenham lost 3-0 at Lincoln City.

The big forward has now played 12 times for League One side Cheltenham, scoring three goals and laying on three assists, following the first half of the season when he was on loan in League Two at Northampton, netting six goals and providing two assists in his 23 games.

Jack Clarke (Sunderland)

Clarke grabbed a crucial assist on Friday to help Sunderland beat Shrewsbury 3-2 at home in League One.

The 21-year-old played the full 90 minutes and earned a six in the Chronicle Live player ratings from the match with the review: "Caused Shrewsbury problems when he got forward down the left, and produced the assist for Broadhead's winner."

On Easter Monday, he got another full match under his belt, mostly as a wing-back, as Sunderland drew 0-0 at Plymouth.

The 21-year-old has now played 15 matches for the sixth-placed League One side, scoring once and providing two assists, as they look to find a route back to the Championship.

Nile John (Charlton Athletic)

John's loan move to Charlton continues to come without a minute of first team football and he was out of the matchday squad again on Friday for the 3-2 defeat at home to Morecambe.

The 19-year-old has been an unused substitute on five occasions for Charlton and left out of the squad altogether in 10 other League One matches. Addicks boss Johnnie Jackson last month explained John and Chelsea loanee Juan Castillo's lack of game time.

"I’ve got players in those positions who, at the moment, they’re in front of them," said the former Spurs man, as reported by South London Press. "I’m judging every day on what I see in training. There’s been opportunities. Nile has been unlucky because he’s not had a lot of opportunities.

"Juan has had a couple of opportunities that he didn’t really take. Nile can count himself unlucky that he’s not had opportunities. I have been looking to try to get him on the pitch at certain times but the nature of the games and state of play, having to make early substitutions in certain games has stopped me being able to do that."

Alfie Whiteman (Degerfors)

The 23-year-old goalkeeper was in goal again as Degefors made it three consecutive defeats to start the Swedish Allsvenskan season as they lost 2-0 on Sunday at Kalmar.

Whiteman did his part in keeping Degerfors in the Swedish top flight last season and will be hoping to impress again during this campaign. Spurs do also have the option to recall him as part of the loan agreement if they were to need him back.

Kacper Kurylowicz (Potters Bar Town)

The goalkeeper is out on loan at non-league side Potters Bar Town, who play in the Isthmian Premier League, while being able to train with and play for Spurs' U23s when required.

Kurylowicz was between the sticks on Easter Monday as Town lost 2-0 at home in their derby against Enfield Town and the Spurs stopper was also in goal on Saturday as Potters Bar lost 3-0 at Bishop's Stortford.
