Parramatta re-sign Lane in contract spree

Parramatta player of the year Shaun Lane has signed a three-year contract extension as part of a spending spree that has led the Eels to acquire Warriors second-rower Jack Murchie.

Lane had a career-best season on the Eels' left edge in 2022, producing more try assists than any non-spine player in the league and averaging over 100 run metres per game.

The 27-year-old had been contracted until the end of next season but would have been free to negotiate with Parramatta's rivals for 2024 from November 1.

Instead, he will remain at the club until at least the end of 2026, by which time he will be 32.

The Eels announced on Friday they have also secured Murchie's future and re-signed local products Sean Russell and Jake Arthur, the son of head coach Brad.

Murchie adds to the Eels' back row stocks following the losses of Isaiah Papali'i and Marata Niukore, and Ryan Matterson's three-match suspension to start the year.

The 25-year-old, like Arthur and Russell, has signed until the end of 2024.

While Russell made only one appearance this year, Arthur managed 14, mostly from the bench but also as an injury cover for Mitch Moses.

He scored a try in the Eels' 28-12 grand final loss to Penrith on Sunday.

"We look forward to the contribution these players will make in our premiership campaigns going forward," Parramatta's general manager of football Mark O'Neill said.

The Eels now turn their attention to securing the futures of halves pairing Moses and Dylan Brown, both of whom come off contract at the end of next year.

Waqa Blake, Will Penisini and Maika Sivo, all members of the Eels side that lost the 2022 grand final, are also without deals beyond 2023.
