It's a question many drivers ask - will I get a fine if I park on faded yellow lines?
As things stand, the rules of the road are clear when it comes to both single and double yellow lines - no vehicles should wait or park on them at any time. The only exceptions are if there are signs which indicate specific times when it is okay to park or seasonal restrictions which temporarily allow it.
However, not all yellow lines are in pristine condition and that poses a question - are they legal to park on? The answer has now been provided by Ask the Police, the official resource for forces in England and Wales, which has stepped in to help motorists.

It appears the issue is far from straightforward and comes down entirely to the condition of the yellow lines themselves, reports Leicestershire Live. While experts at Ask the Police have tried to settle the debate once and for all, they have made clear that the ultimate decision will lie with the courts.
On its website, Ask the Police states: "It depends on how worn the lines are and if they are still visible. If the wear and tear is slight then the courts would probably say that it is so minimal as not to make a difference to the legality of the lines."
However, if the line damage is more severe, it says the courts will then have to decide if that has affected "the legality of the lines". If proven to be illegal, it means drivers will escape a fine.
For any driver caught up in the situation, Ask the Police has given some simple advice. It says: "If you do get a ticket and feel it is unfair, make sure you take clear, detailed photographs of the location and the associated parking signs relating to the lines. If it is a ticket issued by the local authority, there is an appeals procedure, use the contact details on the ticket to get further details."
Above all else, the police resource advises caution. It said: "If in doubt, don't take the risk and find somewhere else to park."
