Parking and nursing homes fees among major Nottingham price rises planned by council

Increasing parking charges and nursing home fees across Nottingham are among the actions planned by the city council to fill a financial hole in its budget. The authority has just completed a review of its fees and charges, with cremations and Council House events also being among the services where a price increase is planned.

The review was first revealed last December when Nottingham City Council set out the fact that it was facing a financial gap of £32 million for the next financial year, which starts in April. The fees and charges review was just one way in which the council said it would fill that gap, with the cutting of 110 jobs and the mothballing of two floors in Loxley House being among the other planned actions.

The review was carried out by an external consultant at a cost of up to £150,000 as the council said it did not have "internal resources available at this time to take this work on." But as a result of the review, the council says it will be just over £2 million better off next year if proposals are implemented.

The plans will now be discussed at a meeting of the council's Executive Board on February 21 and then at a full council meeting on March 6. In papers to be presented to the Executive Board, the council writes: "Where it is found that certain services are provided at below the optimal price, consideration needs to be taken upon the impact of significant changes in prices.

"In some cases, moving to the optimal pricing point in 'one jump' would be unpalatable, therefore a move towards this pricing point should be considered in an incremental manner over several years." The council says its fees and charges policy should now be reviewed on an annual basis.

The review was carried out between last July and December, with public consultation on it running until January 25. Below are some of the most significant price rises being proposed by the council.
