Park up for top green award

A new park developed as part of the ongoing Winchburgh development has been nominated for a sustainable redevelopment award.

Auldcathie District Park has been shortlisted for the best sustainable brownfield / urban regeneration / infrastructure scheme at the Brownfield Awards.

Local development company, Winchburgh Developers, are up for the award for the Winchburgh project alongside subcontracted designers Sweco, I & H Brown, and Optimised Environment.

The new Auldcathie District Park stretches over 85 acres to the west of Winchburgh – linking directly to the Union Canal to the north and Old Drovers Path to the south – past the new schools under construction as part of the strategic growth of the village.

This newly-developed greenspace for Winchburgh has been partly formed from the reclamation of a former landfill site and represents an investment of over £6 million to create a park with a variety of uses to suit everyone.

Auldcathie District Park finished the first phase of its development in the summer of 2021, and is set to complete the second phase this year - with 31,000 freshly planted trees.

Auldcathie also hosts 2.5km of running, walking, and fitness loops – a new biking track, and large play areas.

Built on former industrial land (also known as a brownfield site) the park represents a huge step forward in the regeneration of the historic mining village of Winchburgh as part of one of the largest placemaking projects in the UK.

When complete, the development will deliver at least 3800 new homes, improved transport links, employment opportunities, state-of-the-art schools, and new outdoor spaces to Winchburgh.

The Brownfield Awards celebrate regeneration projects of former industrial landscapes.

The awards take into account the use of innovative techniques, awareness of sustainability, engagement of stakeholders, and demonstration of best practice when regenerating brownfield sites.

John Hamilton, CEO of Winchburgh Developments Ltd, said: “Auldcathie District Park has for a prolonged period been a keenly awaited amenity for the community of Winchburgh.

“With so much planning and expertise having gone into delivering this highly sustainable project using brownfield land it’s fantastic to see that the several years of co-working required for its creation by the Council, Winchburgh Developments Ltd and Sweco is being recognised by the industry.”

This year’s awards ceremony will be held in London on October 13 at the Leonardo Royal Hotel London Tower Bridge where the Winchburgh Developers hope to head home with the award.
