Park to get ‘vital’ public toilets back after huge storm damage

A Wirral park is set to get its public toilets back after they were destroyed in Storm Arwen.

Vale Park in New Brighton had public toilets until the storm hit in November last year, damaging the building beyond repair. But since then a major local campaign has been launched to bring toilets back to the park once again.

Cllr Paul Martin, who represents New Brighton, said: "Following tireless campaigning, I can now confirm there will be a toilet provision in Vale Park again. Thanks to all those that have campaigned on this matter, not least Cllr Tony Jones, my ward colleague, and Sue Powell-Wilde, our New Brighton Labour Party candidate this year.

“Above all, thanks to each resident who has taken the time to get in touch about this, be it via email, telephone call, or Facebook comment. It genuinely has made a huge difference.

“And also to Sean Martin for his organising of the petition, signed by hundreds so far." Cllr Martin, a Labour member, added: “We get a huge demographic of people in Vale Park, with children and people of all ages coming.

“People need access to a toilet, no doubt about it, especially when they’ve had food or drink. Without toilet facilities, we will drive footfall away.

“It’s amazing seeing kids playing out, I take my own kids there every weekend and more often than not one of them starts crying and says they need a wee.”

Cllr Martin thought having toilets at the park was “vital” for its future and said there should be toilets available at all public spaces. Wirral Council confirmed the toilets will be replaced. The council hopes this will be done before the summer holidays.
