Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 Manchester City: Champions League – live reaction

Full-time: PSG 4-2 Manchester City

That is an absolutely sensational second half of football from PSG. I have rarely seen Manchester City bossed so completely. Pep Guardiola’s side are now in serious danger of going out of the Champions League at the league phase.

GOAL! PSG 4-2 Manchester City (Ramos 90+3)

Ramos runs clear and finishes cooly past Ramos, R2-ing (Pro Evo heads know) a finish into the top corner. The goal is initially ruled out for offside, and while it’s true that Ramos was beyond the last man, the goal is given as the last touch was off a Manchester City man, with replays showing that Ramos received the ball after it bounced off Gvardiol’s shoulder. It’s four!

90+2 min: City win a corner. Here comes the cavalry. Stones, Akanji and Gvardiol all come forward but a PSG free-kick is given for a Haaland block (I think).

90 min: Ederson comes to City’s rescue, closing the angle well to deny Ramos, who had wriggled clear.

We’ll have three minutes added on here. As a neutral, I’m surprised it is only three.

88 min: Forgot to mention that Lucas Hernandez has replaced Bradley Barcola, another contender for player of the match. That might look like PSG are going defensive, but they look as likely as ever to get a fourth.

87 min: City finally carve out an opportunity as they desperately try to chase the game. And when I say carve, I mean hack away with a spoon, as they lump the ball forward, win the second ball on the edge of PSG area, with Gundogan firing over from 20 yards out. It was a weak shot in truth, with the ball stuck under the German.

85 min: João Neves has been magnificent in midfield. Not only has he snapped into tackles, been intrinsic in PSG’s press and used the ball smartly, but he looks like he has scored the winner.

“João Neves is John Snows in English”, emails Peter Oh. “When it comes to Champions League goals in Paris tonight, when it rains, it snows”.

PSG GOAL DISALLOWED!

83 min: Hakimi crossed to Ramos, who backheeled the ball into Dembélé’s path, and the winger finished at the back post but was just offside from that Ramos flick. It remains 3-2 to PSG.

Updated

80 min: Just look what this does to the league phase table! PSG up into the top 24 and City are now two points adrift!

GOAL! PSG 3-2 Manchester City (João Neves 78)

PSG come from 2-0 down to lead 3-2! From a deep free-kick, whips in a delicious cross into the box. It goes over every City defender, before João Neves stoops at the back post to nod PSG into the lead. The Portuguese was completely unmarked, so much so that I can’t even tell who was meant to be marking him, but that was still an outrageously difficult header, with the ball flying over a sea of heads and skidding and sliding off the slick turf.

Updated

77 min: Stones, who has been out for a month, comes on for Matheus Nunes. That change is about 25 minutes too late. I wonder if it will be Stones or Akanji at right back.

75 min: A rare lull. This has been a sizzling second half.

73 min: City simply can’t get out of their own half. Ederson, normally so capable with the ball at his feet, has been wasteful in possession on a number of occasions, gifting the ball to PSG as he tries to play out.

71 min: Dembele inches away from giving PSG the lead! The winger cuts in from the right, embarrasses Silva with a nutmeg that would make your father weep before crashing a right-footed howitzer off the underside of Ederson’s bar! Woooooow! Dembele is technically left-footed but he is so strong on either side. Silva, the former Monaco man, can count his blessings that didn’t go in.

70 min: It is not a surprise to see Guardiola hook De Bruyne and Kovacic. Gundogan and McAtee (!) come on in City’s midfield.

68 min: City have lost all control of this game, which has been such a hallmark of their play under Guardiola. But Silva, De Bruyne and Kovacic look very leggy in midfield.

66 min: PSG continue to create openings. Barcola acrobatically volleys over the bar and Dembélé does the same with a wild left-footed shot after good work from Zaire-Emery.

65 min: PSG have made two more changes, Warren Zaire-Emery and Goncalo Ramos on for for Doue and Fabian Ruiz.

63 min: Nunes is having a torrid time at right back against Barcola. A penny for Kyle Walker’s thoughts.

GOAL! PSG 2-2 Manchester City (Barcola 60)

PSG are level! We’ve had four goals in the last 10 minutes! Doué cuts inside, curls a shot over Ederson … the ball clatters into the bar, rebounds out to Barcola and the young winger bobbles a finish in off the far post. It was a scruffy finish in truth, but ultimately did the job! What a response from the home side!

Updated

59 min: PSG’s tails are up. City hanging on here.

57 min: This has long been the case but Bradley Barcola … player.

GOAL! PSG 1-2 Manchester City (Dembélé 55)

PSG right back in this! Barcola nutmegs Nunes on the left wing and sprints clear of City’s defence. Kovacic chases but simply can’t catch the Frenchman, who canters to the byline, cuts the ball back and Dembélé, standing on the penalty, places a finish from the penalty spot under Ederson and into the far corner. Game on!

Updated

GOAL! PSG 0-2 Manchester City (Haaland 53)

It’s two! Haaland’s 47th Champions League goal in 46th Champions League game. Grealish wriggles clear on the left, he stays patient and rolls the ball back towards the penalty spot. Joao Neves intercepts but only diverts the ball into the path of Haaland and the big Norwegian sweeps home at the back post!

Updated

52 min: What a huge goal that is, and a potentially terminal one for PSG’s European season. They are currently 26th, as things stand, and three points adrift of 24th with just one game to go!

GOAL! PSG 0-1 Manchester City (Grealish 50)

Grealish scores just his second goal of the season, mopping up a rebound after Donnarumma saves from Silva! The goal is made almost entirely by Akanji, who left Nuno Mendes for dead on the right-hand side. The Swiss drove to the byline and made the opportunity for Silva, after which Grealish scored.

Updated

47 min: Dembélé starts on the right wing for PSG. On his day, he is one of the best wingers in the world and the Frenchman has six goals in his past four games.

Peeeeeeeep! We’re underway again at the drenched Parc des Princes.

Both sides make half-time changes. PSG bring on Dembélé for Lee.

City on Jack Grealish and Rico Lewis for Savinho and Ruben Dias. That means Gvardiol goes to centre-back and Lewis goes to left-back. Grealish in front of Lewis on the left wing.

These are other half-time scores in the 8pm GMT kick-offs. Feyenoord!

Celtic 0-0 Young Boys
Feyenoord 2-0 Bayern Munich
Milan 1-0 Girona
Real Madrid 2-0 RB Salzburg

Half-time reading/quizzing:

Half-time: PSG 0-0 Manchester City

We’re all square at the break.

“Great to see VAR working as intended, chalking off stunning team goals because a knee cap protruded half an inch beyond the tip of the last defender’s boot”, emails Kári Tulinius, correctly.

PSG GOAL DISALLOWED!

45 min: PSG denied an opening goal after the slickest of moves! Nuno Mendes and Lee play an absolutely outrageous one-two to split City’s defence in half. Nuno Mendes races through on goal but rather than shoot, he squares a pass to Barcola, past the onrushing Ederson. Barcola takes a touch (!), lays it off to Hakimi, who sidefoots a finish into the relatively empty net! City defenders were scrambling back to cover and I think Hakimi’s finish took a little deflected off Dias, which actually helped PSG. But after the home side celebrate, the referee chalks the goal off after Nuno Mendes was proved to be offside in his initial run. A shame! From the neutral’s point of view, of course.

Key event

43 min: Despite TNT Sports’ insistence that this is a Champions League classic, this has not been an enthralling first half. Intriguing perhaps.

Updated

40 min: City applying pressure as the end of the half nears. A dangerous cross comes into the box towards Dias but Marquinhos makes an expert defensive header with Donnarumma flapping around like a penguin.

38 min: Chance for City and Savinho! Foden slips in a lovely through ball to the Brazilian, who takes a nice first touch away from compatriot Marquinhos and flicks a finish towards the far corner. But Donnarumma collapses nicely – Schmeichel style – and saves with his legs. Good football all round!

Updated

36 min: “I’ve decided that Pep on the sidelines looks like a trawler fisherman who has just made it back to port after a tough four days and nights searching for herring on the high seas”, emails Sean Boiling. “All he caught was a cold.”

It continues to be wet in Paris, in case you were wondering.

Updated

33 min: PSG the better side, but are lacking a focal point with a front three of Lee, Doue, Barcola.

A reminder that Goncalo Ramos, signed for €80m in 2023, is on the bench. And Randal Kolo Muani, signed for €80m in 2023, has just been loaned out to Juventus. Hmmm.

30 min: Doué is clearly enjoying himself, showboating on the right wing to look Kovacic a bit silly. But there’s no end product and the PSG teenager loses the ball again.

The PSG ultras, by the way, are absolutely deafening. Some atmosphere.

28 min: City counter-attack at pace, with Marquinhos very lucky not to receive the game’s third booking for upending De Bruyne. Savinho picks up the loose ball, drives forward through the middle of the pitch and releases Haaland just a second too late. The City striker had to check his run and then was off balance and outmuscled by Pacho.

Should mention that I missed that PSG’s Nuno Mendes has picked up a booking for clearing out Matheus Nunes.

Updated

Gvardiol clears off the line for City!

26 min: PSG earn a corner after a Vitinha shot is deflected behind. Lee whips it in to the near post, Neves gets a flick on and the ball drop to Fabian Ruiz six yards out but the Spaniard sees his shot blocked by Gvardiol on the goalline! The City defender was in the right place at the right time and shinned it clear!

Updated

24 min: Savinho sends Hakimi to the shops with a dummy feint, as the Brazilian canters down the left wing with purpose. Savinho crosses low to Foden, but the Englishman loses his footing on the edge of PSG’s area at the crucial moment.

22 min: First chance for Haaland! Foden hangs up a cross from the right wing but the big striker can’t get enough power on the lofted cross, and Donnarumma gathers easily.

20 min: Doué with a rabona! PSG lose possession, though. Senseless waste.

18 min: England manager Thomas Tuchel is in the stands, sat right next to France manager Didier Deschamps.

Updated

16 min: PSG have definitely been the brighter in the opening minutes, especially down this left side with Barcola looking bright, but City are beginning to enjoy some possession in midfield without creating any clear-cut chances. Haaland is lurking dangerously on the last man, though.

14 min: City’s back four has switched. It is now, from right to left: Matheus Nunes, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol. So all four are in different positions to the one they were in 10 minutes ago.

12 min: Here come City. Savinho tries a shot – blocked by Marquinhos before De Bruyne finds some room and pings an effort right at Donnarumma. Well saved by the Italian.

10 min: Big chance for PSG! Dias floors Hakimi, for which the City defender receives an early booking. From the resulting free-kick, a swirling ball is sent to the back post where João Neves meets it with a free header! But the former Benfica man sends his header over! Oooooh, and that’s a bad miss.

8 min: City’s back four is currently, from right to left: Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol, Nunes. Matheus Nunes at left back! Well, I never.

“Glad you mentioned the kits Michael,” emails Ian Sargeant. “I was wondering how I’d describe City’s. If you put three lime, two lemon and one strawberry Starburst/Opal Fruits in your mouth - chewed them all without swallowing any and took the glob out of your mouth you’d have something looking pretty close”. V

Very specific with your calculations there, Ian. And I like it.

6 min: PSG’s Doué latches onto a beautiful diagonal pass and drives into the box, registering our first shot of the nigh and stinging Ederson’s palms with a fierce drive.

4 min: Both teams are operating with a high press. Silva wins the ball in midfield for City before Foden breaks forward at pace. City earn a corner, but they take it short and the move completely peters out.

2 min: I have already mentioned the rain but it is fairly torrential and making for a very slick surface. I smell a defensive slip.

It’s raining heavily in Paris. City will feel at home.

For clarity, PSG’s big-money €70m signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, is not cup tied. Napoli are not in any European competitions this season, which might be a factor in why they are currently top of Serie A. However, Kvaratskhelia is ineligible for PSG tonight because he wasn’t registered for the league phase back in September (because he was only bought this month). The Georgian can, however, be registered for the knock-out stage of the Champions League, should PSG make it.

Updated

Our clockwatch is live, covering the following matches that also kick-off at 8pm GMT:

Milan v Girona
Arsenal v Dinamo Zagreb
Celtic v Young Boys
Feyenoord v Bayern
Real Madrid v RB Salzburg
Sparta Prague v Internazionale

Much of the Manchester City focus building up to this match continued to fall on Erling Haaland after the news broke last week of his record-breaking nine-and-a-half-year contract.

City have also spent big on two young defenders this month. Neither Vitor Reis or Abdukodir Khusanov are in Guardiola’s squad tonight.

There is expected to be a further big-money arrival in Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Let’s unpack those teams a little.

PSG line up in a 4-3-3, a more defensive formation to the one they fielded at the weekend against Lens. Having started that game, Warren Zaïre-Emery drops out of the XI. Having missed that squad entirely, Ousmane Dembélé returns to the bench.

Manchester City line up in their customary 4-2-3-1 that will morph into a 4-3-3 and back again. Jérémy Doku has a knock so Savinho comes in. Gündogan drops out for Bernardo Silva. John Stones returned to the squad after a one‑month injury layoff, while Rodri has travelled to be a part of things as he recovers from his anterior cruciate ligament rupture. Kyle Walker is not in the squad as he looks to complete his move to Milan.

The teams!

PSG: Donnarumma, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Neves, Fabian, Lee, Doue, Barcola.
Subs: Safonov, Tenas, Kimpembe, Goncalo Ramos, Dembele, Asensio, Hernandez, Mayulu, Zaire Emery, Lucas Beraldo, Zague, Tape.

Manchester City: Ederson, Matheus Nunes, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol, Silva, Kovacic, Foden, De Bruyne, Savio, Haaland.
Subs: Ortega, Carson, Stones, Grealish, Gundogan, Wright, Alleyne, O’Reilly, Lewis, McAtee.

Referee: Szymon Marciniak (Poland)

Should mention that Brest, the surprise team of this league phase, are currently 2-0 down away at Shakhtar in one of the early kick-offs. Half-time there. It may be that the French side have to settle for a play-off, rather than the top eight.

Elsewhere, RB Leipzig lead Sporting 1-0. The Portuguese side continue to struggle following the departure of Ruben Amorim to Manchester United, who continue to struggle following the departure of Erik ten Hag, who struggled at Old Traffor … you get the gist.

Updated

Fábian Ruiz, who scored the winner in PSG’s 2-1 comback win at Lens at the weekend, is one of two PSG players that will miss the next (and final) league phase match if he is booked tonight, Nuno Mendes is the other. The Portuguese wing-back is so important to Luis Enrique, where it’s in a 4-3-3 or a 3-4-3 formation, so it’s important that he stays out of the referee’s book tonight, from a PSG perspective.

Updated

In case you haven’t been following, PSG are in rather good form domestically, winning six of the last seven in all competitions including crucial league wins over Lyon, Monaco and Lens. That means the Parisians are nine points clear of second-placed Marseille with just over half the season done.

The Champions League has been a different story altogether, though. Wins over Girona and Salzburg have been overshadowed by defeats to Arsenal, Atlético, Bayern and a home draw to PSV. They are the lowest-ranked French team in the competition by a distance, with Brest, Monaco and Lille sitting ninth, 10th and 11th respectively. This was a nice preview piece by Raphaël Jucobin that outlines how well Ligue 1 teams have done in the Champions League this season, PSG aside.

Preamble

What a game this is. The new format was designed to make the first stage of the Champions League more exciting, and while we can’t yet decisively judge if this has been a better idea than keeping the ol’ group stages until the league phase reaches its conclusion, 2024-25 certainly has provided plenty of shocks, and created more jeopardy for the so-called bigger teams, particularly because said teams are meeting earlier in the competition.

With PSG in 26th out of 36 teams and Manchester City 24th with just two games left in the league phase, both teams have already said goodbye to their chances of automatic qualification (the top eight) to the last 16. If one team loses tonight, there is also a possibility that they might not even make the play-off round (finishing in the top 24 after eight games). If PSG and City draw tonight and results go against them, we could end up in the situation where neither side make it to a play-off. But there is plenty of football yet to be played before that.

Neither manager is under any illusions about the precarity of the situation. “I don’t know how many points we will need [from the final two games]”, said City manager Pep Guardiola this week. “Six points will be mathematically [sure], but maybe four, maybe three”.
