Paris Olympics: Team GB gold medal hopefuls assessed

Team GB have set their sights on at least 50 medals at this summer’s Olympics, alongside a top-five finish in the medal table.

A remarkable run of success across the past two decades could even lead to a record-breaking haul, which sits at the 67 earned in Rio in 2016.

Here’s where Team GB’s best chances in Paris lie...

Athletics

UK Athletics might have been struggling financially, but that is not reflected on the track. Keely Hodgkinson has talked in the build-up of Paris potentially being the team's best performance in a major championships for some time. The 800m is undeniably the best bet for gold, but there are other strong contenders. Matt Hudson-Smith has been in prolific form in the 400m and recently broke his own European record. Josh Kerr is the current 1500m champion, while Molly Caudery has her sights on pole vault gold. Katarina Johnson-Thompson will also believe she can be in the mix.

Cycling

Team GB have chances to shine across all of the disciplines. On the road, arguably the best bet is Josh Tarling in the time-trial, but he faces stiff competition from some established names. Tom Pidcock will double up in two different disciplines, aiming to defend his mountain bike title before lining up in the road race. On the track, Katy Archibald's absence after a freak accident at home is a massive blow, the Scot potentially the star turn of the British Cycling team. But Emma Finucane looks destined to be a sprint superstar. Then there is Beth Shriever, the defending BMX champion.

Swimming

In Tokyo, from a British perspective, the headlines were predominantly hogged by Tom Dean, who defied a series of Covid bursts to shine. Dean has missed out on qualifying in the event in which he is Olympic champion, the men's 200m freestyle, but GB have gold-medal hopefuls in Duncan Scott and Matt Richards. Scott has his sights set on a first individual Olympic gold, while Richards looks set to be the team's break-out star. And then there is the small matter of Adam Peaty, suggesting he is peaking at just the right time in his quest for a hat-trick of Olympic 100m breaststroke titles.

Rowing

Tokyo was an unmitigated disaster from the British team, bankrolled by millions and yet failing to deliver the usual gold rush that the public has grown accustomed to. The message in Japan from the team hierarchy, which has since had an overhaul, was to judge them on Paris — and the signs are looking good. Emily Craig and Imogen Grant are arguably the biggest bankers for gold, while the women's quadruple sculls are world champions and Helen Glover, in her fourth Games at 38, is going for gold in the four. The men's pair, four and eight are all in with a shot to top the podium.

Others

Equestrian ambitions have taken a dent with the sudden exit of Charlotte Dujardin, but hopes will still be high across dressage, three-day eventing and showjumping. In triathlon, Alex Yee and Beth Potter look the Brits best placed to go for gold. Max Whitlock has ambitions for a third gold on the pommel horse, while Joseph Choong is the man with a target on his back in the Modern Pentathlon. Jade Jones is fancied for more Taekwondo gold, while the sailing team is expected to bring home a raft of medals.
