Hours after Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon ruled out starting tackles Paris Johnson and Jonah Williams but would not say whether their season was over, the team announced roster moves.
Johnson and Williams were placed on injured reserve, ending their season.
Johnson suffered a knee injury in Week 15 and missed the team’s 36-30 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Williams exited the game on Sunday with a knee injury.
They made two moves to fill their spots on the roster. Jackson Barton was signed from the practice squad to the active roster. Barton will start at right tackle for Williams.
They also signed linebacker Benton Whitley to the active roster from the practice squad of the New York Giants.
Whitley will be an outside linebacker for Arizona. He is 6-foot-4 and 260 pounds and entered the NFL in 2022 as a rookie free agent out of Holy Cross. He originally signed with the L.A. Rams and has spent time with them, the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings and Giants.
Over the last two seasons, he has appeared in six games. He has no tackles but has a pass breakup and a fumble recovery in 16 defensive snaps and 74 on special teams.
The Cardinals also brought back cornerback Darren Hall, signing him to the practice squad. He was on the roster for nine weeks, appearing in four games and being inactive five times.
