As the Paris Games approach, security concerns loom large over the grand opening ceremony. Originally planned to accommodate around 600,000 spectators, the event's capacity has been reduced to approximately 320,000 due to security threats. Tourists have been informed that they will not be able to view the ceremony for free from riverbanks, as the French government has scaled back its ambitions in light of ongoing security risks.
French President Emmanuel Macron has indicated that the ceremony may be relocated to the national stadium at Stade de France if security risks are deemed too high. With the Games scheduled to run from July 26 to August 11, security and transportation are top priorities for organizers.
The Paris Games will feature a diverse range of venues, including historic locations like the Palace of Versailles for equestrian events and Place de la Concorde for urban sports. The Grand Palais, Yves-du-Manoir Stadium, Parc des Princes, and Roland Garros are among the iconic venues hosting various competitions.
Ticket sales have been robust, with around 9 million of the 10 million available tickets already sold. Soccer, track and field, basketball, and rugby sevens are among the top-selling sports. Additional tickets will be released on April 17, with prices ranging from 24 euros to 2,700 euros.
Security measures for the Games are extensive, with approximately 30,000 police officers expected to be deployed daily and 45,000 for the opening ceremony. France has requested assistance from 46 countries to provide extra officers, and additional security protocols will be in place throughout the event.
Transportation challenges are anticipated, with potential train strikes and traffic restrictions in Paris during the Games. Transport operators are preparing to accommodate between 600,000 to 800,000 visitors per day, with adjustments to subway ticket prices and service schedules.
The Olympic Village will host over 14,000 athletes and officials, while fans and tourists face increased hotel and Airbnb prices in the Paris region. Despite initial price hikes, competition from Airbnb listings has led to some hotel rate reductions.
