Several Los Angeles-area convenience stores have been targeted by a group of unruly teens in a series of flash mob robberies over the summer. The Los Angeles Police Department has reported that at least three parents have taken the responsible step of turning in their children to the authorities in connection with these crimes.
Surveillance footage shared by the police shows groups of young men arriving at the stores on bikes, forcibly entering the premises, and causing chaos once inside. The incidents have raised concerns among local residents about the potential escalation of such criminal behavior if left unchecked.
Assistant Chief Blake Chow revealed during a recent LAPD commission meeting that teen surrenders occurred on September 26, 28, and 29. Another parent turned in their child on September 29, resulting in the juvenile being booked for robbery.
The LAPD has described the group responsible for the robberies as a 'bicycle crew' comprising approximately 20 to 40 juveniles. Most of the reported incidents took place on Friday evenings, with suspects entering the stores, stealing merchandise, causing property damage, and fleeing without payment.
Witnesses have recounted being physically pushed by the suspects during these criminal acts, instilling fear and concern for their safety. While no physical injuries have been reported, the aggressive and callous nature of the crimes has left a lasting impact on those affected.
The targeted 7-Eleven locations span across the Rampart, Hollywood, Wilshire, and West L.A. divisions. Dr. David Swanson, a licensed clinical psychologist, emphasized the importance of addressing such behavior early on to prevent potential escalation into more serious crimes that could lead to incarceration.
It is evident that the actions of these teens have prompted swift intervention from responsible parents and law enforcement authorities to curb further criminal activities and ensure the safety of the community.
