Parents search for Celtic fan missing in Lanzarote 13 days after he vanished in holiday resort

The parents of a man who has gone missing in Lanzarote have flown over to the holiday destination in a bid to track him down.

Gary Watson Shearer had travelled from his home in Renfrew to the Spanish island alone on March 16 to celebrate St Patrick's Day, but went missing the night he arrived.

The 53-year-old's parents Ann and Daniel are said to be 'absolutely devastated' with attempts to find him so far proving unsuccessful. A search has been organised from the bar where he was last seen.

Gary, who suffers from seizures and Type 2 diabetes, checked into his hotel around 5pm, leaving his belongings in his room before heading out to Bar 67 on the Puerto Del Carmen Strip.

He enjoyed the festivities at the popular Celtic bar and was spotted chatting to a group of men before leaving 'quite drunk'.

From there, he spoke to another male outside the bar who tried to get him into a taxi but the driver refused to take Gary. He hasn't been seen or heard from since.

The search for Gary is ongoing in Lanzarote (Bar 67)

His family tried to contact him on Friday, March 17, but couldn't get hold of him.

Worried dad Daniel phoned the hotel on Monday but they said they couldn't give any information. By Tuesday, mum Ann decided to contact Jet2 who then alerted the authorities who entered his room and found his passport, money, and all his belongings. He hadn't even slept in the room.

Gary, who has a 34-year-old son, was officially reported missing on March 21.

We previously told how his loved ones are beside themselves with worry and fear that he could have come to harm.

Sister Nikki explained: "You think the worst, has he had a fit and fallen? Is he lying in a ditch somewhere? Then you think he's without his medication. Just everything is running through your mind."

Bar 67 has organised a search leaving from the venue at 12pm on March 31.

Posting on social media, they said: "I met Gary's family today at Bar 67 and they are absolutely devastated, such nice people and they just want there family member home."

Gary is described as wearing a hoops Celtic top with cream/beige-coloured shorts and white Nike trainers with green and yellow.

He has short hair and walks with a distinctive limp.

An Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
