Parents raging as Santa's grotto burned to the ground by school vandals

A Motherwell school targeted by firebugs twice has hit out at the 'needless' vandalism.

Firpark Primary School was targeted twice within weeks by vandals who burnt down a shed created to be 'Santa's Grotto' over the festive period.

Teachers, pupils, and parents were dismayed when they found the shed had once again been burnt to the ground on the morning of Monday (December 19), with the structure thought to have been set alight overnight. The building within the grounds of the school, that teaches children with additional support needs, was previously targeted on December 9.

Janette Thomson, whose daughter attends the school, spoke of the anger felt by the community following the attacks.

Speaking to Glasgow Live , she said: "The shed was created by a teacher and had been there for years and used and Santa’s Grotto each Christmas.

"We turned up on the ninth and it was burned to the ground. We put an appeal out because the week after the 16th, the school was holding a winter wonderland which is in the grotto.

"We did the appeal and thankfully were provided with a new shed for a discount. Luckily winter wonderland went ahead and all the kids got to see Santa.

Janette, who is also a member of the parent council, said she was disgusted when it was discovered that vandals had once again burnt down the shed.

She said: "I was so angry. It’s not just myself - all the parent council and other parents have showed their disgust over what has happened. We think maybe they burnt the first, saw we put up a new one and wanted to get us back again.

"What's the benefit of burning the shed? I can’t understand why they would want to do that in the first place - it's needless. I know it’s not only our school that’s been targeted, I know other schools have had problems.

"As it’s an ASN school, some of the kids didn't realise what’s happened but others were confused that they were meant to see Santa. They’re quite disheartened. The area it’s in is an outdoor play area in a wooded area.

"It makes us nervous about what they could do next. They’re taking it away from the kids - the kids love that outdoor area.

"We don’t know who’s done but even if it’s someone that’s older, they’re acting like a child."

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
