The parents of a West Australian baby who died this week are behind bars accused of neglecting the boy over a four-month period.
Jahley Poata, 30, and Marea Te Oke Mae Hunia, 31, are alleged to have failed to seek treatment for the boy, also named Jahley, who was six months old when he died in hospital.
In a statement, WA Police said the baby was taken to a hospital in Collie, in WA's South West region, on September 26, but because of his condition he was then transferred to Perth Children's Hospital.
The child died on Wednesday, October 5.
Both Mr Poata and Ms Hunia are facing a charge of failing to protect the baby from harm between the start of June and late September this year.
Neither made any application for bail when they appeared separately in the Perth Magistrates Court, although the lawyer for Mr Poata indicated he may make one at his next appearance.
The charge was read to them and both acknowledged that they understood it.
Mr Poata and Ms Hunia are both due back in court next week.
