Recent reports from Sudanese officials and rights groups have shed light on the devastating impact of insurgent attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Force in White Nile state. According to the Sudanese foreign ministry, the RSF targeted civilians in the al-Gitaina area following their perceived defeat by the Sudanese army. The death toll varies, with official sources citing 433 casualties while the Sudan Doctors’ Trade Union reports 300 deaths.
Emergency Lawyers, a rights group monitoring violence against civilians, revealed that over 200 individuals, including women and children, were killed in RSF attacks over the past three days. The attacks reportedly involved executions, kidnappings, forced disappearances, looting, and shooting of those attempting to flee.
Minister of Culture and Information Khalid Ali Aleisir condemned the attacks as a form of systematic violence against defenseless civilians. The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which commenced in April 2023, has resulted in the loss of more than 24,000 lives and displacement of over 14 million people, constituting approximately 30% of the population. The United Nations estimates that 3.2 million Sudanese refugees have sought shelter in neighboring countries such as Chad, Egypt, and South Sudan.
