Paralympic cyclist Lora Fachie and her guide dog Tai are set to make CBeebies Bedtime Story history by reading from a book in braille.

It will also mark the first time that the illustrations will be audio described.

The episode will go out on October 13 and falls on World Sight Day, which aims to bring attention to blindness and vision impairment.

Gold medallist Fachie, 34, will read The Secret Code, written by Dana Meachen Rau, and illustrated by Bari Weissman.

It tells the tale of a young boy whose class mates think he can read in a secret code only to discover it is, in fact, braille.

The story celebrates the joy of reading in all of its forms and introduces children to a non-sighted experience.

The braille transcription was provided by Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and this is the first of two stories that Fachie has recorded for CBeebies.

The Liverpool-born athlete has a hereditary sight loss condition which also affects her two brothers and her mother.

She lost her sight at the age of five, leaving her only with light perception.

Fachie - who is pregnant with her first child - said in a press release: “I am over the moon to read a CBeebies Bedtime Story for the first time in braille.

“I have always enjoyed reading and hope this will encourage everyone to want to read whether they use their eyes, their ears, their fingers or a secret code.

“Reading feeds the imagination and I will be reading to my little one from the minute they are born!”

Fachie’s story will air at 6:50pm on Thursday before being made available to watch on-demand via BBC iPlayer.
