Paolo Nutini's comeback gig doesn't disappoint

Paisley's favourite son, Paolo Nutini, made a long-awaited return to the Scottish stage this weekend.

The unlikely setting of Oban's Corran Halls, was the venue for the songwriting legend's homegrown gig to celebrate his return to the stage after a long hiatus.

Even fellow Scots star Lewis Capaldi famously wondered where Paisley's own Paolo had got to in his extended absence.

But he delivered a storming answer when he raised the roof during the second of his two night run of intimate gigs in the Argyll coastal hub.

And it was worth the wait.

Paolo, a genuinely nice fella, was greeted by an enthusiastic response from the sell-out crowd at the 600 capacity hall.

In a performance which blew the roof off the remote town's largest venue, any fears he or his management harboured of a decline in popularity following time away must surely have been put to bed.

After a five year break since he last took to the stage, the rocker was greeted by a howling crowd, egging him on with chants of "Go Paolo Nutini".

His response to their welcome? A heartfelt: "That's lovely".

The Buddie legend, who seems to share a genuine rapport with his audience, marked his return with an excellent mix of new material and old favourites.

He brought the house down with hits of yesteryear like the popular Candy and Coming Up Easy from 2009 and covered Cherry Blossom from his last Caustic Love album, buoyed by a crowd who were singing along nearly as loudly as he was.

And he received an equally warm reception from the audience, which seemed to include a strong travelling Glasgow contingent, to his much-anticipated new tracks including Petrified, Acid Eyes, and Through the Echoes from the forthcoming new Last Night in the Bittersweet album, due in July.

But the climax of the tremendous show was the solo delivery of acoustic versions of Iron Sky and hard-hitting husky climactic classic No Other Way.

Paolo, the homegrown answer to enduring balladeer Tom Jones - except he also writes his own material - managed a storming two hour performance to delight the audience to screaming, chanting and warm applause.

And he even managed a rousing solo acoustic version of Dougie MacLean's hit Caledonia, much to the delight of fans.

His return was well worth the wait but if the audience's rapturous reaction was anything to go by, they were left thirsting for more of the same.
