Things are going to be quite different, and perhaps quite hectic, for NFL teams in their journeys to their 53-man rosters. But Dan Morgan and the rest of the Carolina Panthers front office are ready.
The team’s former linebacker and current assistant general manager spoke with reporters on Tuesday, one week before the big cutdown of the summer. And Morgan gave a little peek into how the braintrust is operating for the new rules of roster construction.
“We’re buildin’ our preseason board right now,” Morgan said, via Sheena Quick of Fox Sports Radio 1340. “There should be 1,200 guys or so that are gonna get cut at the cutdown. We’re up to like 1,400 reports. So what we’re doin’ right now is we’re buildin’ our board and we’re stackin’ it by position.”
As opposed to previous summers, where teams were given three separate checkpoints of cutdowns, there will be one day where the chopping block is used—on Aug. 29. Teams must get from 90 players to their initial 53-player program on that Tuesday.
Morgan continued.
“And then from there, obviously, we’ll talk about it as a staff and we’ll look who we’re really interested in and who we’re thinkin’ about claimin’ at the cutdowns,” he added. “So right now, we’re just writin’ a ton of reports. Our scouts are doin’ a great job. And we’re just really excited about the 53-man cutdown and that whole process.”
