Sean McVay’s offense has often been called quarterback-friendly. The route concepts he uses and the pre-snap motion give his quarterbacks a lot of open receivers, making life easier for the guy under center.
Defenses have adapted to McVay’s scheme over the years but the core concepts of it are still highly regarded in NFL circles. The Panthers are even taking ideas from McVay’s offense as they build their scheme around Bryce Young with head coach Frank Reich, who’s in his first season with Carolina.
That’s according to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, who shared that tidbit this week.
“They’re molding the schemes together, with the Rams and the Colts. With Frank Reich and what they were doing with Sean McVay,” Wolfe said. “So they’re trying to create a quarterback-friendly scheme for Bryce. Get a lot of motion, get a lot of pre-snap motion and on-snap motions. And some RPOs, as well, so that he can get the ball to those playmakers – be the point guard they drafted him to be.”
Reich is a quarterback-friendly coach himself, having coached that position throughout his career. Though he and the Colts didn’t have a ton of success during his four-plus years in Indianapolis, he now has a franchise quarterback again after watching Andrew Luck retire one year into Reich’s tenure.
The Young-Reich partnership is an exciting one and it could turn the Panthers into contenders relatively soon.
