Panthers signing QB Jacob Eason to practice squad

Just minutes after Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule eerily foreshadowed an impending quarterback addition on Wednesday afternoon, some pretty pertinent news hit.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the team is set to sign former Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Jacob Eason to their practice squad.

Carolina suffered from two critical quarterback injuries over the last two weeks, losing Matt Corral (foot) for the season and Sam Darnold (high-ankle sprain) for 4-6 weeks. Because of that, the team was forced to keep PJ Walker on the 53-man roster despite his struggles throughout training camp.

Eason (6-foot-6, 231 pounds) was selected by Indianapolis in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He has seen extremely limited playing time since, throwing just five regular-season passes in his professional career. Still, at just 24 years old, Eason is younger than Walker and could develop into a capable backup at some point.

And if the name sounds familiar, maybe it’s because he tossed this beautiful deep pass against the Panthers in their 2021 preseason matchup:

Eason is now the 15th known member of the practice squad, leaving one more spot in the group open.
