Panthers S Juston Burris returns on a one-year deal

Even though the Carolina Panthers have been pretty busy trekking around the country to watch this year’s incoming quarterback class, they haven’t been busy enough to take care of their own. And this week, specifically, has been all about taking care of the secondary.

On Thursday night, Juston Burris became the latest defensive back the Panthers have requested seconds on. As announced by the team themselves, the safety will return for 2022 on a one-year agreement.

Burris initially broke into the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the New York Jets in 2016. Following three seasons in “The Big Apple,” the NC State product bounced around between the Cleveland Browns and the then Oakland Raiders from 2018 to 2019.

He then joined Carolina in 2020, on a two-year, $8 million pact. The six-foot, 210-pounder has totaled 76 combined tackles and two interceptions over 23 games since.

Burris is now the third member of the Panthers secondary to re-up with the franchise in the past five days—joining cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Rashaan Melvin. Additionally, with Xavier Woods already signed on for a three-year, $15.7 million contract, Burris will likely serve as the next man up over the top behind Woods and Jeremy Chinn.
