Carolina released former Jacksonville first-round draft pick, edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson, on Tuesday, the Panthers announced.
Chaisson, who spent the last seasons with the Jaguars, signed with the Panthers in March after not being re-signed by Jacksonville.
The Jaguars’ No. 20 overall choice in the 2020 NFL draft, Chaisson appeared in 57 games with Jacksonville but started just 11. He compiled five sacks, 11 tackles for loss, 73 total tackles and two defended passes with the club.
Under former general manager Dave Caldwell, the Jaguars envisioned Chaisson as the edge-rushing heir to Yannick Ngakoue, who following a contract dispute was traded from Jacksonville to Minnesota four months after Chaisson’s selection.
Ngakoue had recorded 37.5 sacks and 42 tackles for loss in four seasons with the Jaguars before being dealt; Chaisson had tallied 9.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss in three collegiate seasons with LSU.
Chaisson is not Jacksonville’s only 2020 first-round pick to have spent a short amount of time with Carolina in continuing their NFL career.
Cornerback C.J. Henderson, the Jaguars’ No. 9 overall selection that year, was traded to the Panthers in Sept. 2021, fewer than two seasons into his tenure with Jacksonville.
The Panthers let Henderson walk in free agency this March. He spent the offseason with Houston but was released last week.
