Bryce Young is no longer the most recent No. 1 overall draft pick in North American sports. That distinction now belongs to 19-year-old Victor Wembanyama, who was selected atop the 2023 NBA draft on Thursday night.
So, in welcoming him to the club, the 5-foot-10 Carolina Panthers quarterback recorded a congratulatory message for the 7-foot-5 San Antonio Spurs center:

Wembanyama, perhaps the most touted basketball prospect since LeBron James, officially makes his long-awaited jump from France to the NBA. The reigning LNB Pro A Most Valuable Player averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 3.0 blocks per game for Metropolitans 92 during their 2023 season.
In a pick a lot closer to home, the Charlotte Hornets—even to the dismay of their fans (and mascot)—opted for 6-foot-9 forward Brandon Miller with the second overall selection of the evening. Miller, like Young, now heads to Charlotte straight out of the University of Alabama.
So even though Wemby was the star of this show, the tide rolling into the Carolinas over the past few months is certainly worth keeping an eye on.
