Panthers OLB D.J. Wonnum reveals ‘scary’ setback he dealt with this offseason

Carolina Panthers outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum has dealt with quite a bit over the past year.

The 26-year-old defender spoke with reporters this afternoon, one day after returning to the practice field for the first time since joining the team in the spring. And Wonnum, who has been recovering from a torn quadriceps he sustained as a member of the Minnesota Vikings last December, revealed that he was fighting against a whole lot more these past few months:

Wonnum signed a two-year, $12.5 million deal with the Panthers out of free agency.

Unlike wide receiver Adam Thielen and safety Jordan Fuller were on Wednesday, Wonnum was not officially designated to return to practice. He was listed as a limited participant for yesterday’s session and as a non-participant today.

Per Joe Person of The Athletic, Wonnum believes he’s a “week or so away” from playing a game.
