Panthers LB Frankie Luvu shines with more snaps in Week 2

Which snap count totals stood out in the Carolina Panthers’ Week 2 loss to the New York Giants? Let’s take a look.

Linebacker Frankie Luvu made the most out of his career-high defensive snap share (96 percent). His 10 tackles, all of which came as solo takedowns, were tied for a team-high—with four of them chalked up for losses.

The fifth-year defender showed why the organization inked him to a two-year extension this offseason. He was active, fast and all around the rock in leading what was a pretty solid performance from the defense.

Dare we say that he’s even giving us flashes of one Thomas Davis?

One of the men who tied Luvu in tackles on Sunday was safety Xavier Woods. And he too is making the most of his chances.

Woods, along with fellow safety Jeremy Chinn, played in 100 percent of the defense’s snaps. Of the unit’s 153 plays through two weeks, he’s been on the field for 152 of them.

He’s also registered 10 tackles over both outings.

More McCaffrey

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

The Panthers didn’t give running back Christian McCaffrey his usual workload in Week 1, throwing him out on 43 of the offense’s 53 snaps (81 percent) and dialing him up for just 14 touches. He’d, rightfully so, see more activity in Week 2.

McCaffrey was on the field for 91 percent of the offense’s presence. He also chalked up 19 touches, turning 15 carries and four receptions into 128 yards from scrimmage.

On a side note, wideout Terrace Marshall Jr. also saw an uptick—going from zero to six snaps. But he, like fellow receiver Rashard Higgins, went a second straight game without a target.
