Panthers HC Frank Reich: Bryce Young showed ‘complete command’ in 1st practice

The Carolina Panthers drafted quarterback Bryce Young with this year’s No. 1 overall pick because of how well he controls the game—and they already got a taste of that during his first time out on the practice field.

On Friday, following the team’s opening installment of 2023 rookie minicamp, head coach Frank Reich was asked how he thought Young performed throughout the session. Reich, predictably, seemed rather satisfied.

“Yeah, Bryce made a great impression,” he replied. “Obviously, mentally and physically, looked the part in every way. Threw the ball exceedingly well. You can tell he was in a good space mentally. Really had a firm grasp on everything we asked.”

So, what did the Panthers ask?

Reich would go on to say that he and offensive coordinator Thomas Brown wanted to find the fine line in easing the rookie quarterback and his peers in. But what they did get out of Young was quite impressive.

“I don’t wanna overdo it on the first day, but he did every little thing right,” he said. “The little throws out in the flat, the little bubble screen stuff, the deep over throw, throws in the flat. Just threw it with accuracy, saw it well, knew where guys were supposed to be. Yeah, just showed complete command.”

Young, Reich and the Panthers will try to keep completing said command in closing out this minicamp over the weekend.
