The Carolina Panthers defense could have a little extra bolt on Sunday.
Head coach Dave Canales spoke with reporters on Friday afternoon, following his team’s final practice ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. When asked about the newly-added Charles Harris, Canales said that the veteran pass rusher could have a role in Sunday’s home opener.
Canales also praised the eighth-year defender’s energy and professionalism throughout the week as well as his “cool pass-rushing tools.”
Those tools could be quite useful to the Panthers, who are currently carrying just three other outside linebackers on their active roster—Jadeveon Clowney, DJ Johnson and Eku Leota. Carolina mustered up all of just one sack of New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr in their 47-10 loss last weekend.
Harris, a former first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins, comes over after a three-year stint in Detroit. He recorded 10.0 sacks over 36 games for the Lions between 2021 and 2023.
