Shane Steichen is yet another name in a long line of young offensive hot shots the Carolina Panthers have expressed interest in. But, not being a former player and having just three years of experience as a full-time offensive coordinator, the 37-year-old does bring some mystery to the conversation.
As the play caller for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020 and the Philadelphia Eagles for 2021 and 2022, Steichen has produced some of the league’s most solid offenses. Not only have his units never finished below 17th in scoring, but he’s also played a huge hand in the development of both Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts.
Steichen’s quarterbacks have always posted impressive numbers, which has probably caught the eye of owner David Tepper and his front office. Herbert’s Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign under Steichen saw him toss for 4,336 yards, 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while Hurts was in the thick of the 2022 MVP race with 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns through the air and 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.
The hiring of Steichen, who could be tagged as a “quarterback guru,” would signal an initiative to finally find an answer under center. Like any other young candidate, it would come with some risk—but Steichen has proven to be one of the more consistent offensive minds and can bring a spark to a struggling offense.
