Panthers great Greg Olsen: People forget just how good Cam Newton was

Carolina Panthers great Greg Olsen caught some strays this past week. And now, he’s firing back.

With the Cam Newton-Josh Allen comparisons making their annual appearance following last weekend’s elimination of the Buffalo Bills, Olsen was needlessly dragged into the discourse. It was the following tweet, in fact, that caught the attention of many—including the tight end himself:

So, how did Olsen feel about the viral shade? He entered the chat during his interview on Thursday’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show.

“I did see that video,” Olsen said. “There was a tweet that somebody put up and it was saying like, ‘Cam Newton went 15-1 and the only players worth a [expletive] that he had were Ted Ginn and Greg Olsen.’ And I was like, ‘Wait a minute, how the hell did I get pulled into this?’

“Check the numbers, right? Check the numbers. Hey, listen, Pat—sometimes, you have to be your own best self-advocate. You gotta look up how many guys out there have more catches than me. Look up how many guys have more yards than me. There’s not a lot.”

Amongst all tight ends in NFL history, only five guys have more catches than Olsen. And only six guys have more yards.

He also went on to defend the legacy of Newton.

“I think people don’t give Cam enough credit because in this world—where everyone wants you to throw for 4,500, 5,000 yards and throw for 45 touchdowns—like, that wasn’t us,” he continued. “But when you added up his rushing impact, his rushing touchdowns, his impact in short yardage, goal line and his ability to play from the pocket and be a true passer along with all those other things—I think people forget just how good Cam was, and I think he deserves as much credit and praise as anybody.
