Panthers great Cam Newton: I’ve spoken with some teams

Is Carolina Panthers legend Cam Newton getting closer to an NFL job? Well, it doesn’t sound like it.

Newton was this week’s guest on Undefined with Josina Anderson, where he and the longtime league insider spoke about anything from football to the 2023 Met Gala. But it was the former, obviously, that was of particular interest—as Anderson asked the free-agent quarterback if he’s been in contact with any teams.

“Yeah, but I think a lot of stuff was also predicated off of the draft, too, which I knew that,” he said.

Anderson then tried to pull some names from the former Most Valuable Player.

“Discretionary. I’m not gonna share no teams,” Newton replied. “I have spoken with some teams and it was kinda the same sentiment—we’re gonna see after the draft.”

Unfortunately, that doesn’t sound too concrete for Newton—who last played in 2021 for the Panthers.

Nonetheless, Newton seems ready for the right opportunity to come his way—even if he catches some unnecessary criticism for it.

“It’s just been something that I’ve known, where I’m at in my transition, I knew it was gonna lead to this,” he added. “So, I’m stayin’ in the best shape. Been makin’ sure that I’m ready, willing and able. And this is the reality—I’m in a position where it’s like I’m damned if I do, damned if I don’t.

“Come out with a list when it’s like, yo, there’s not 32 guys better than me. And it’s like, ‘Yo, Cam you’re not a starter, you’re not a franchise player no more.’ I was like—okay, cool, then I’ll come out with a list of guys that I would back up. It’s like, ‘How dare you come out with a list of guys that you think you can . . . ” It’s like, what the hell do you want me to do?”

Newton, in a recent YouTube video, named 11 quarterbacks he’d be willing to back up. But to some, including FOX Sports’ Shannon Sharpe, the list of passers came off as an “arrogant” list of demands.

Anyway, he did give Anderson another list of his, reluctantly hinting towards the teams he had spoken with prior to the draft. He said they were in the AFC—somewhere from the north, south, east and/or west divisions.
