Panthers 36, Cardinals 30: Arizona eliminated with OT loss

The Arizona Cardinals have been eliminated from postseason contention on Sunday. They lost to the Carolina Panthers 36-30 in overtime as Chuba Hubbard had a 21-yard touchdown win with 3:18 left in the overtime period, capping his 152-yard, two-touchdown game.

Arizona suffered penalties, injuries and had a crucial turnover late in the fourth quarter.

They fell behind 20-3 in the first half but rallied to tie the game with a 58-yard field goal at the end of regulation.

Kyler Murray threw a touchdown pass and rushed for another but threw a fourth-quarter interception.

They lost running back James Conner, right tackle Jonah Williams and linebacker Baron Browning in the game.

3-and out to start game

The Cardinals opened the game having to punt. Marvin Harrison Jr. was offside on the first play of the game, negating a 14-yard pass to Trey McBride, and Harrison and Kyler Murray were not on the same page on a third-pass leading to a punt.

Panthers 7, Cardinals 0

Chuba Hubbard scored on a one-yard run. He had 29 rushing yards in the possession. The Cardinals were flagged twice for big penalties, a pass interference against safety Budda Baker and a roughing the passer on linebacker Xavier Thomas.

Panthers 7, Cardinals 3

James Conner had a 40-yard run in the drive but the Cardinals were flagged for three more penalties, including a holding penalty on center Hjalte Froholdt on fourth down when Conner picked up seven to convert the first down. After the penalty, Chad Ryland made a 48-yard field goal.

Panthers 13, Cardinals 3

Panthers quarterback Bryce Young had a 34-yard scramble and then ran for 23 yards for a touchdown. Eddie Pineiro missed the extra point.

Fumble! Cardinals turn it over

After picking up a first down on the next drive, Murray’s handoff to running back Michael Carter was fumbled and the Panthers recovered.

Three plays after the turnover, Young connected with Adam Thielen for an eight-yard touchdown pass.

Conner had a 36-yard catch on a screen pass and then ran six yards for a touchdown.

Defense forces 3-and-out

The Cardinals defense finally did something. Baron Browning got credit for a zero-yard sack and, after a five-yard run by Hubbard, Young had to throw away the third-down pass.

The Cardinals came up big at the end of the half. With 11 seconds left, Murray threw a one-yard touchdown pass to DeeJay Dallas. It came after Jaycee Horn was called for interfering with McBride in the end zone. Conner was huge in the drive. He rushed for 52 yards and had a 10-yard catch.

The Cardinals went into the half trailing 20-17 but heating up. Conner had 111 rushing yards and 47 receiving yards.

Panthers 23, Cardinals 17

The Panthers pick up three on the opening drive of the second half. Pineiro made a 29-yard field goal after the Cardinals forced two incompletions in the red zone. Young had a 20-yard pass to Thielen get them inside the 20.

The Cardinals couldn’t get the ball in the end zone but added three points on a 30-yard field goal. Conner and right tackle Jonah Williams left the game with knee injuries and were ruled questionable to return.

Injuries

Conner injured his right knee. Williams hurt his knee. Then linebacker Baron Browning went to the locker room to be examined. He was shaken up on a play at the sideline when teammate safety Rabbit Taylor-Demerson collided with them. It was announced he had a neck injury and was questionable to return.

Safety Joey Blount made a tackle on a punt and appeared to injure something on his right arm or shoulder.

Panthers 30, Cardinals 20

Young threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to David Moore, an absolutely beautiful throw, giving the Panthers a 10-point lead with 12:04 to go in the fourth quarter.

On third-and-6 at the 20, Murray ran 20 yards for the touchdown to pull the Cardinals within three points with 6:56 to go.

3-and-out forced

The Panthers were called for holding on first down and the Cardinals forced a three-and-out. They took over at their 38 with 4:52 to go.

Kyler picked off

On third-and-11, Murray hesitated on a throw to Michael Wilson and then threw it, only to be picked off by Demani Richardson. Carolina took over at their 14.

OVERTIME! 58-yard FG good!

The Cardinals forced a punt and then between a pair of Murray scrambles and an 11-yard catch by McBride, Chad Ryland made a 58-yard field goal to force overtime.

Panthers get the ball first, go 3-and-out

The Panthers won the toss and elected to receive the ball. The Cardinals sacked Young on third down to force a punt. The punt went 57 yards to the 10, where the Cardinals took over.

The Cardinals picked up one first down on fourth down but then were flagged fro a delay of game and Murray was sacked by Josey Jewell inside the 10. They were penalized on the initial punt and had to repunt. The Panthers took over at the Arizona 49.

Hubbard ran 28 yards on the first play and, on the next, went 21 yards for the game-winning score, eliminating the Cardinals from the postseason.
