Pandemonium as Edinburgh ScotRail passengers get 'trapped in a tunnel'

A passenger has spoken of pandemonium on a morning commuter train after they were trapped in a tunnel for just under an hour at Haymarket Station.

The ScotRail traveller, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that those travelling through to Glasgow Queen Street on the 7.30am train on Thursday May 11 were stuck in the tunnel for around fifty minutes.

They say that the Caledonian Sleeper train had broken down in front of them and that they ground to a halt at around 7.35am.

Those on the train were understood to be stressed and it is understood that first aiders came into the ScotRail carriages to check on the wellbeing of those travelling through to Glasgow from the capital.

The train reversed up the track into Princes Street Gardens where it sat for a short while before the technical fault on the Sleeper was fixed and the train moved on.

The concerned passenger said: “I have anxiety so sitting in a tunnel for an hour was absolute torture.

“They had first aiders come on to check on everyone - I was almost crying.

“We were on the 7.30am train and it stopped at around 7.35am, we were then stuck in the tunnel until 8.20am when the train moved backwards and sat in Princes Street Gardens.

“The train was full, it was pretty busy.”

ScotRail released a statement on Twitter at 8.18am this morning, it said: “NEW: Due to a fault on a train at Haymarket, services running trough this station will be cancelled, delayed, or revised.”

They later updated travellers at 10.51am: “CLEARED: Disruption caused by a fault on a train in front of this one at Haymarket has now ended. Services are no longer affected by this problem.”

One person commented below the post saying their daughter had also been caught up in the disruption: “My daughter was on the 7.30am train from Waverley to Glasgow.

“They were stuck in a tunnel coming into Haymarket for about 30 minutes.

“It was due to the Sleeper train which they managed to move and she’s now on her way.

“She’ll miss her first class at college unfortunately.”

Phil Campbell, ScotRail head of customer operations, said: “We’re sorry to our customers who experienced disruption to their journey as a result of this incident, that was outwith our control.

“Anyone who was delayed by 30 minutes or more is entitled to compensation through our Delay Repay Guarantee. Just keep hold of your tickets and claim on the ScotRail website or mobile app.”
